The Story of Blogger

Blogger was started by a tiny company in San Francisco called Pyra Labs in August of 1999. This was in the midst of the dot-com boom. But we weren’t exactly a VC-funded, party-throwing, foosball-in-the-lobby-playing, free-beer-drinking outfit. (Unless it was other people’s free beer.)

We were three friends, funded by doing annoying contract web projects for big companies, trying to make our own grand entrance onto the Internet landscape. What we were originally trying to do doesn’t matter so much now. But while doing it, we created Blogger, more or less on a whim, and thought — Hmmm… that’s kinda interesting.

Blogger took off, in a small way, and eventually a bigger way, over a couple years. We raised a little money (but stayed small). And then the bust happened, and we ran out of money, and our fun little journey got less fun. We narrowly survived, not all in one piece, but kept the service going the whole time (most days) and started building it back up.

Things were going well again in 2002. We had hundreds of thousands of users, though still just a few people. And then something no one expected happened: Google wanted to buy us. Yes, that Google

We liked Google a lot. And they liked blogs. So we were amenable to the idea. And it worked out nicely.

Now we’re a small (but slightly bigger than before) team in Google focusing on helping people have their own voice on the web and organizing the world’s information from the personal perspective. Which has pretty much always been our whole deal.

For more on Google, check google.com. (Also good for searching.)

Installing ActiveGrid

I have no idea actually in saying what ActiveGrid is. I’ve just been asked to install this
application. After had the link from sourceforge, I scheduled to download it at night.
Ughh.. Actually it is one binary file only, which became easy to be
installed. However I got confused due to our server has more than one
mysql installed and one more thing: “they are located on uncommon
location” :(.

I’m still confuse :( but seems I have a clue for that :)

hope on monday I can fix them.

Installing Oracle 8i

I was trying install Oracle 8i onto my computer under Windows OS, but it was strange. After “setup” file is clicked, busy icon is appear but nothing happened then.

I tried to install on notebook, everything was ok. The installation was run properly.

Got confused, I asked google for this problem, and here is the answer:

———–
If you are using P4…Its a known bug…Here is a easiest workaround assuming your processor is a Pentium 4 …

1. Create a temporary directory on your server.
2. Copy the contents of the Oracle RDBMS CD to the temporary directory created in step 1.

3. Search the directory structure created in step 1 for the existence of the filename symcjit.dll….mostly you will find 2 files

4. Rename each copy of the symcjit.dll to symcjit.old.

5. Run the setup.exe from the installwin32 directory and install Oracle 8.1.x.

LASIK Eye Surgery { video }

Have you heard about LASIK surgery? It’s related to eyes. The LASIK (which is stand for Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis) technology is very useful for myopia and presbyopia sufferer.

The references and testimonies about LASIK can be read at my following posting (It’s written in Bahasa Indonesia, unfortunately):

The surgery process is only take about 10 minutes for one eye. After the surgery process, I can go home and can see at that time (even though it’s glare still).

If you are interested to know how the process actually, you can see the recording of my surgery here:

Postgresql: How to change column type

Whatever the reason is, but sometimes we decided to change column type of table. It’s quite easy to implement the patch it MySQL, but not in PostgreSQL (I’m currently using pgsql 8.14).

There are two ways (I just know those two) to solve that problem:

1st solution:BEGIN;ALTER TABLE table_name ADD COLUMN new_col new_data_type;

UPDATE table_name SET new_col = CAST(old_col AS new_data_type);

ALTER TABLE table_name DROP COLUMN old_col;

COMMIT;

However, It is used when we want to change type of the latest column (its position in the table), except we can determine to add column in the certain position.

Since it cannot be used in all situations, I have found another way to solve that problem:

2nd solution:1) Copy old table to temporary tableCREATE TABLE temp AS SELECT * FROM old_table;2) Drop old table

DROP TABLE old_table;

3) Create new table (as required structure)

CREATE TABLE new_table ( col1 type(xx), col2 type(xx) );

4) insert data dari table temporary ke table baru

INSERT INTO new_table SELECT * FROM temp ;

Yeah.. that’s it! I think it will be useful.
